A McGruff House provides a source of urgency aid. It is not an escort service or a guarantee of safety but rather a place for appropriate short-term adult help. An effective McGruff House Program demonstrates that the community accepts a shared responsibility to watch out and help out on behalf of all its children. West Jordan currently has seven out of its 13 elementary schools participating in this program. If you are interested in becoming a McGruff House volunteer contact your school's PTA president or the West Jordan Crime Prevention Unit. Bicycle Safety Crime Prevention Specialists and Bike Officers teach bike safety with a full-scale bicycle course designed to teach kids to ride safely and to always wear a helmet. Bicycle Licensing Bicycle licensing is a key component in being able to return a lost or stolen bike to its rightful owner. Licensing your bike is a free service provided to West Jordan residents. Our stranger safety program can be tailored to appeal to children of all ages. Kids in Charge Kids in Charge is a home alone safety program for children ages 8 to 13. Crime Prevention Specialists, Officers, and Firefighters teach kids the basics of being safe at home. Although we do not advocate that children be left at home alone, the reality is that many are from time to time. Families are encouraged to talk about rules and consequences in their home and to develop phone lists of responsible people who can be contacted for help including emergency numbers. Seatbelt Safety We teach seatbelt safety and correct usage of child safety seats. Boy Scout Merit Badges We would be happy to set up a training meeting with your scout group to help pass off these merit badges. These meetings can be scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Along with these merit badges, the crime prevention unit also provides tours of the police department. To arrange for the Fingerprinting or Crime Prevention merit badges, please contact the Crime Prevention Unit. If you are interested in arranging a presentation, training or any of the other services listed please contact the Crime Prevention Unit.
