Promoting Community Awareness Through Citizen Participation
"Bridging the gap between police and citizens"

 Citizen Police Academy

The spring 2017 session of the Academy that begins Thursday, January 12th,2017 is full. We are currently taking applications for the fall session of the academy which starts in  August 2017.

Mission
Your police department wants you to understand how officers protect and serve West Jordan residents, visitors and business owners. The Department believes citizens who understand police roles can be more supportive of police activities when more information is made available which in turn provides greater peace, safety and citizen quality of life.

What is it?
The Citizen Police Academy is in place so you can receive a working knowledge through a behind the scenes experience that is designed to foster a closer relationship between the police and the community we serve and you live in.

You will be afforded a first-hand experience during 13-weeks of classes held once a week for three hours. The instruction is comprehensive and inter-active covering a different area of the West Jordan Police Department and the justice system each week.

The Citizen Police Academy classes are very popular and are offered twice a year in January and August. The Academy can only accept 24 people for each 13-week session. You are expected to complete the full-course. You must be at least 18-years-old and able to pass a thorough criminal background check. Applicants must also complete enrollment forms. There are no fees or charges to attend if you are approved.

Citizen Police Academy Classes

The classes start at 6:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. and held in the West Jordan Justice Center Community Room at 8040 South Redwood Road.  There are two field trips: firearms range and a SWAT Team scenario.

  • How we recruit and train
  • Introductions to police divisions:

Instructors are drawn from the police academy staff, from police officers currently assigned to specific enforcement divisions, and also from non-WJPD divisions and agencies. CPA class members are given an opportunity to observe police patrol work through a four-hour ride-along experience with a patrol officer. On the last day of class, members participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate of completion.

Who May Attend?
The classes are made up of persons from all walks of life. There is no fee to attend the Citizen Police Academy. The minimum age for enrollment is 18. Applicants must not have a criminal record, must complete the CPA – Application and pass a basic background investigation.

When You Graduate
