  Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker

Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker devices (AVB) protect against backsiphonage and are not effective against backpressure.

This backflow prevention device is used for low-hazard pollutants only "taste and smell"! You must never place a valve or other obstructions downstream of the AVB, a shutoff valve will keep the device under pressure allowing the internal float check to seal against the air inlet port. These devices can only be in use 12 hours in every 24 hour period.

For these reasons, an AVB will need to be installed downstream of every sprinkler zone valve, and they must be installed a minimum of 6" above the highest outlet.
It is the only backflow prevention device that is non testable and does not need yearly inspection from the state tester.

The AVBs should be installed as follows:
  1. Install the device in an accessible location for servicing.
  2. The device is to be installed a minimum of 6 inches above the highest outlet it serves.
  3. The device is not to be installed in a pit or in any location where any part of the device could become submerged in standing water.
  4. Never install in a situation where it will be under continuous operating pressure for more than 12 hours in a 24 hour period. "NO DOWNSTREAM VALVES"
  5. Protect the device from freezing by draining it in the winter months when the system is not in use.
