Served as General Counsel to local developers | Office Responsibilities To fulfill its mission, the City Attorney's Office is organized into two divisions: Civil Law Civil attorneys advise the City Council, City Manager and staff in all areas of municipal civil law. These functions include: (a) drafting and reviewing contracts; (b) advising the City on all aspects of land-use law, civil rights, construction law, real estate, and employment law; (c) drafting and reviewing municipal and State legislation; (d) advising on insurance and risk management issues; (e) defending and prosecuting suits to protect the City's and its employee's legal rights and interests; (f) managing outside legal counsel; and managing or engaging in appellate advocacy before all State and Federal courts. Criminal Law City attorneys prosecute misdemeanors, including some class "A" crimes, and handle appeals from the Justice Court to the District Court. In addition, they advise the Police Department regarding warrants, investigations and other criminal matters; civilly abate public nuisances; enforce building/housing codes, land-use and zoning laws; and manage the City's domestic violence program.
